ION Construction Update

Construction of Stage 1 ION, the Region of Waterloo’s light rail transit (LRT) service is nearing completion. Final paving operations are getting underway along the ION route, and are expected to be completed by the fall. This work will require short-term, full road closures to allow for application, curing and striping of the asphalt.

Read on to find out what’s happening, when and where. Remember that the timing of all work is subject to weather conditions and construction constraints.

Downtown Kitchener


Getting Around

  • Starting as early as June 18, crews will begin to complete final asphalt paving in Downtown Kitchener. The following closures are required for this work:

    • Victoria, from Waterloo to Charles, will close nightly on or about June 18 at (7 p.m. to 7a.m.) for approximately two nights

      • Intersections impacted: Victoria/Charles and Victoria/King

    • King, from Victoria to Francis, will close nightly on or about June 19 (7 p.m. to 7a.m.) for approximately two nights

      • Intersection impacted: King/Francis

    • Francis, from King to Duke, will close nightly on or about June19 (7 p.m. to 7a.m.) for approximately two nights

      • Intersection impacted: Francis/Duke

  • Charles, Victoria to Gaukel, will close nightly on or about June 22 (7 p.m. to 7a.m.) for approximately two nights

    • Intersections impacted: Charles/ Francis; Charles/Water; Charles/ Gaukel,

    • In preparation for this paving the following intersections will need to close for one day:

      • Charles/Francis will close on or about June 20

      • Charles/Gaukel will close on or about June 20

      • Charles/Water will close on or about June 21

  • Charles, Gaukel to Benton, will close nightly on or about June 26 (7 p.m. to 7a.m.) for approximately two nights

    • Intersections impacted: Charles/Ontario; Charles/Queen

    • In preparation for this paving the following intersections will need to close for one day:

      • Charles/Queen will close on or about June 20

      • Charles/Ontario will close on or about June 21

      • Charles/Benton will close on or about June 22

  • Duke, between Queen and the Duke Street parking garage, is closed until approximately June 23 for Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro work.

  • Short-term lane restrictions may be required to complete work on Duke and Frederick

Construction

  • Final asphalt paving along Victoria (Waterloo to Charles), King (Victoria to Francis), and Francis (King to Duke)

  • Installation of LRT track on Frederick, from Duke to King

  • Installation of signage, equipment and furnishings including benches, trash receptacles and bike racks at the Kitchener City Hall, Victoria Park, Queen and Frederick ION stops. The light features and security cameras have been activated at these ION stops

  • Work to install the GRT bus shelters on Frederick/Benton from King to Charles, will continue through late-June

  • Work to prepare the embedded track for sealing application

Night work

  • Until approximately late-July, crews are periodically working at night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) on Victoria (Charles to Duke), Charles (Victoria to Borden), Frederick (Duke to Charles) and Duke (Francis to Frederick)

ION CONSTRUCTION UPDATE                           
Downtown Kitchener 
 
GrandLinq has advised the Region of Waterloo that they will complete final asphalt paving in areas of Downtown Kitchener.
 
The work will see the final layer of asphalt placed from June 18 - 27, in a series of separate nightly road closures. A breakdown of the areas impacted each night is included below.
 
During this work, GrandLinq crews plan to place asphalt and stripe the road at night. The road will re-open during the day.
 
The work is subject to construction constraints and weather conditions. Final asphalt cannot be placed in wet or humid weather. If this occurs, the work will be re-scheduled and will be communicated to all stakeholders as well as posted on the ION construction website.

Victoria (Waterloo to Charles)
  • June 18-19, full road closures at night beginning at 7 p.m.

  • The road will be re-opened during the day

  • Intersections impacted:

  • Victoria/King; Victoria/Charles

King (Victoria to Francis) and Francis (King to Duke)
  • June 19-20, full road closures at night beginning at 7 p.m.

  • June 22-23, full road closures at night beginning at 7 p.m.

Paving Schedule for Halls Lane

Below is an updated paving plan for Halls Lane:

Benton Street to Eby Street – Ongoing Monday May 29th. Paving to start at 7:00am at concrete walkway and head towards Eby St. this section is to be completed by around 12 Noon. At 12 Noon start paving from concrete walkway to Benton St. this section to be completed by 3;00pm.. We ask that all vehicles be removed from Halls Lane for this paving operation. Vehicles left in the way of the paving operation, will be towed. Paving by the Crown Plaza Hotel is planned between the Hours of 11am – 3pm.

Benton Street to Queen Street– Monday May 29th. Paving to start around 3:00pm at the Benton St end and continue to as far as they can get by the 6 - 7:00pm.. We ask that all vehicles be removed from Halls Lane for this paving operation. Vehicles left in the way of the paving operation, will be towed.

Ontario Street to Queen - Scheduled to take place on Tuesday May 30th starting at 6:00am. Paving will start at Ontario St. at 6:00am and pave past the Parking Garage of the NetSuite building by 9:00am. The Parking Garage will be closed off to traffic until we get the new asphalt back rolled and cooled down. Once the asphalt is cooled down the Parking Garage will be opened to traffic by around 9:00am. After 9;00am the Paving Operation will continue to finish the Block between Ontario and Queen.. Vehicles left in the way of the paving operation, will be towed. Paving by the Walper Hotel is planned between the Hours of 11am – 3pm.
